Mental health and physical health are inextricably linked. Inevitably, if one suffers, the other will also. When dealing with mental health issues it is important to care for your physical health as well to achieve the best results for your overall well-being.
Diet is an important part of both your physical and mental well-being. When experiencing mental health challenges, it can sometimes be helpful to examine your diet to understand if there are any dietary factors contributing to your mental health outcomes. Do you eat too much or not enough? Is your diet well balanced? Are there certain elements of your diet that may be contributing to vitamin deficiencies or inflammatory responses? All of the above factors can contribute to poor mental health and should be assessed and corrected as needed.
Exercise also plays a distinct role in mental health. Keeping your body moving can lead to more energy, greater strength, and less physical pain. Physical fitness also plays a role in what kind of social and outdoor activities you can participate in as well which can increase your ability to cope with mental health challenges. If you find that you are lacking in terms of physical fitness, take some time to determine what type of exercise best fits in with your interests, availability, and fitness level. Just 30 minutes of moderate exercise per day is all you need to lessen your chances of mental and physical health concerns.
Sleep is also a key element of mental wellness. Lack of sleep can contribute to low energy, difficulty focusing, and poor mood. Conversely, too much sleep can also lead to sluggishness and depressive symptoms. If your sleep isn't ideal, put some energy into examining your sleep hygiene to improve your ability to rest. Try to go to sleep at the same time every evening. Ensure your sleep environment is tailored to your needs as far as light, noise, temperature, and comfort. Limit screen use before bed. Good sleep routines are big contributors to positive mental health.
Physical health has a large impact on mental wellness. The health of your mind and your body are very much linked and taking care of your body will inevitably lead to positive mental health outcomes as well. Healthy diet, exercise, and sleep routines are essential to the treatment of various mental health concerns including but not limited to depression, anxiety, and ADHD. Caring for your body is essential to caring for your mind. Treat yourself as a whole person for the best outcomes!
